Donor Area—This is the section where healthy hair grafts will be harvested. The donor area is usually on the back and sides of the scalp where hair growth is permanent and not affected by the chemical DHT, one of the main influencers of male and female pattern baldness.
Recipient Site—This is the section of the scalp where healthy donor grafts will be transplanted. The recipient site is usually on the top and crown of the head, where thinning hair most frequently occurs.

The ARTAS® robotic hair transplant procedure can take anywhere from 4 to 8 hours depending on your needs, goals, and desires. You will be seated throughout the procedure and can take breaks as needed. The procedure is virtually painless. Most patients report little to no pain during and after the treatment.

Preparation
Before the procedure, our surgeon will use ARTAS® to create a simulation of how your new hairline might look following the hair transplant. The doctor will estimate the approximate number of grafts that will be needed for transplant depending on your degree of hair loss. The doctor may advise you to stop using topical hair treatments two weeks before the procedure. The doctor may also prescribe a special shampoo and may advise you to stop taking blood-thinning medications, avoid alcohol, and stop smoking for a certain period before the procedure. If you have light hair, he may ask you to dye your hair 3 days before the procedure.

Recovery

Prior to the development of the ARTAS® robotic system, the NeoGraft® device was one of the most used hair transplant systems on the market. The NeoGraft® is a handheld device that is operated by a medical professional to harvest donor hairs. Here’s how the two technologies stack up:

The Handheld NeoGraft® Device
Both the NeoGraft® and the ARTAS® utilize the FUE hair transplant method but in different ways. The NeoGraft® uses air pressure and suction to remove hair follicles from the donor site, a process which is done entirely by hand. The device fits over the operator’s electronic punch tool and aids them in harvesting the donor hairs. However, about 1,500 to 2,000 individual grafts must be removed in each procedure, which puts the operator at risk of muscle fatigue in the hand. While the NeoGraft® device was designed to help speed up the process and reduce fatigue of the operator, it still relies solely on his or her skill and ability. This means there’s much more room for human error when using the NeoGraft® device.

Also, many practices use technicians to complete this part of the procedure instead of a doctor. Harvesting donor hairs requires precision and skill and should always be performed by a surgeon, or should at least be supervised by a skilled surgeon.

The ARTAS® Robot Hair Transplant System
This robotic doctor’s assistant produces much more precise results and eliminates the worry of operator hand fatigue. Unlike the NeoGraft®, which is entirely hand-operated, the ARTAS® uses an advanced computer program and the skills of a qualified surgeon to expertly harvest donor hairs. Although the donor hairs are harvested and transplanted by the robot, the surgeon is in complete control during the entire process. The ARTAS® utilizes advanced AI technology and a sophisticated visual system to map out the entire donor site and select donor hairs following guidelines set by the doctor.

The machine harvests sections that include one to four follicles, depending on the parameters set up by the surgeon. It can perform up to 1,000 grafts per hour. The ARTAS® stays within the donor area, choosing the best donor hairs and avoiding areas of scarring. This ensures that only the very best grafts are chosen. Since the machine does all the harvesting itself, precision and accuracy remain at the same level through the entire procedure, whereas in the NeoGraft® method accuracy may decline as the operator fatigues. While both are viable options for hair transplant procedures and both have seen success, the precision of the ARTAS® is unmatched by any other technology.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair transplant method that involves removing your own donor follicles and implanting them where you need more hair coverage. It is performed without scalpels and requires no incisions or stitches—this means there is no linear scar. Dr. Do uses the ARTAS® Robotic Hair Transplant System to perform the FUE method. Aesthetic Surgery Institute is one of only two locations in Houston, Texas to use this high-precision robotic tool for hair transplantation.

Hair transplantation doesn’t stop the loss of non-transplanted hairs. However, hairs that are transplanted by the ARTAS® system are permanent and will grow identically to those found in the donor area where they were harvested. The ARTAS® system uses your own permanent growing hair, usually from the back of the head. Hair in this area is often not as susceptible to the conditions that cause male pattern baldness. The ARTAS® robotic hair transplant procedure is suitable for both men and women. It’s ideal for patients who prefer to wear their hair short.
